About this book
Gizmo follows a young boy with autism who finds the world hard to navigate because he cannot express his emotions. The adults around him say they love him unconditionally, but he only feels loved when he is on his best behavior, which rarely happens. Most of the time he is caught up in conflicts that stem from his limited ability to express himself.
One day the boy is taken to choose a service animal, and he falls in love at first sight with a particular dog. Once the dog is trained, it becomes an intimate part of his life. The dog loves him without conditions, and when the boy feels true love, strange things begin to happen: he starts to express his emotions.
At first he can show only his deep love for the dog. As his spirit is renewed by his inseparable new companion, he gradually begins to express his feelings to other people as well. The world becomes a happier and more interesting place for him, and a friendship with another boy develops.
