About this book
Christmas is coming, and Carlos and his family are driving south across the border to Mexico to go home. The trouble is that Mexico does not feel like home to Carlos, even though he and his sisters were born there. He wonders whether home can be a place you hardly remember.
At first the village of La Perla looks much like the other villages along the way. Then Grandfather, Aunt Ana and the rest of the village sweep Carlos into the holiday festivities. Gradually he starts to see why Mama and Papa love the place they left behind, and he learns that home can be anywhere, because it lives in the hearts of the people who love you.
This picture book is written by Eve Bunting and illustrated by David Diaz, the Caldecott Medal-winning team behind Smoky Night. It follows a Mexican American family's Christmastime trip and celebrates the warmth of the holidays and the spirit of Mexico.
