Michael Lewis, the author of Moneyball and The Big Short, turns his reporting toward Sam Bankman-Fried, the cryptocurrency entrepreneur behind the exchange FTX and its trading firm, Alameda Research. The book follows Bankman-Fried from his early years to the period just after both companies came apart.

Lewis presents a portrait of a young man raised by two law professors who went on to build a fortune in the fast-moving world of crypto trading. The book also looks at the ideas that shaped Bankman-Fried's sense of purpose, including effective altruism, and at the culture that grew up around his companies.
