Governor

For sixteen years, the author worked in a high-security women's prison, where she came face to face with infamous offenders including Rosemary West and Myra Hindley. She assumed little could shock her after that. Then she was transferred to HMP Wormwood Scrubs, a notorious London prison that was, in her words, a man's world. Her direct manner and refusal to be intimidated earned her a fast climb through the ranks, ending in the role of Governor of Security and Operations.

Her time there brought a constant stream of demands: handling celebrity criminals, breaking up drug rings, recruiting informants, and surviving violent attacks. Written with frankness and a sharp sense of humour, this memoir describes life behind bars in unflinching detail. Readers who are easily shocked or offended may want to reconsider before going further.

Under the nickname The Gov, the author opens the prison gates one final time. The book takes readers into the everyday routine of some of the toughest criminals in the UK, with all its chaos and dread.
