greasing it on
About This Book
Larry Dean's passion for aviation started with small model airplanes, grew through a steady diet of flying magazines, and eventually led him to take flying lessons. His romantic life is just as full. Unsure where he stands with Jennifer, he finds himself drawn to Brenda, a welfare worker whose temperament suits his tastes. A chance meeting at a McDonald's introduces Monica, a lawyer who strikes him as very attractive. He also keeps company with Ginger, a vegetarian student at UCD who is uninhibited in the bedroom. All the while, Larry begins slipping back into the early history of flight, starting with the Wright Brothers and their Flyer. Each shift is announced by a whirring blower noise, rendered as brrr and putt putt, and the sound seems to stir something emotional in him. Only after a visit to a therapist, who suggests he record whatever sets off these trips through time, does Larry see the connection between the sound and the jumps. His journeys carry him to fly a variety of aircraft and place him in many different eras and locations. As he reflects on his life, Larry decides he is mature enough to choose which of these women would make a suitable partner for the years ahead. He also hopes that, now that he understands the elements that trigger the shifts, the mechanism that moves him through time will stop working.
