Guillotine
About This Book
Guillotine is the second poetry collection from Eduardo C. Corral, author of Slow Lightning and winner of the Yale Younger Poets Prize. Its poems cross desert country where migrants travel, and they linger on grief, the lasting marks left by betrayal, and the border itself. The collection speaks through undocumented immigrants, Border Patrol agents, and people spurned in love. Corral builds dramatic portraits marked by contradiction, endurance, and a raw, persistent inner life. Throughout, the poems ask what becomes of people who are unwanted or cast aside, and whether unrequited love can wear a person down to nothing. In the sequence "Testaments Scratched into Water Station Barrels," Corral moves freely between Spanish and English. The poems bend around the surfaces they are written on and overlap like graffiti left by travelers who may or may not have survived the crossing. The book strengthens Corral's place within contemporary American poetry.
