Heaven No Hell

Heaven No Hell is a collection of comics stories by Michael DeForge. Each one follows an ordinary person who is coming to terms with a world that turns out to be very different from what they thought it was.

In "No Hell," an angel takes a tour of the five tiers of heaven, and as she goes it becomes clear that she is fixated on a haunting infidelity. In "Raising," a young couple uses an app to preview what their unborn child would look like. What starts as a simple face-blending experiment turns into a flood of too much information, and the couple has to face some terrible choices they have made.

In "Recommended for You," a narrator anxiously retells the plot of a favorite TV show, a drama about societal collapse in the vein of The Purge. The retelling becomes a way of examining our hunger for meaning in pop culture.

DeForge pairs his drawings with writing that is darkly funny and emotionally weighty, and the stories take apart the way society works through the inner turmoil of their characters.
