Here and now

Nouwen's meditations argue that faith is not postponed to some future moment or reserved for retreats, but lived in the present, where God makes himself known through everyday meetings with other people. He writes with warmth and candor, and the reflections feel like a conversation with a trusted friend.

The chapters move across the full texture of ordinary life. He considers how joy can persist alongside grief, how friendships and family bonds bring both loss and gain, and what prayer demands and offers. Forgiveness, compassion, the discipline of following Christ, and the slow, unending work of personal conversion also receive attention.

Nouwen looks at routine days with both humor and sorrow, and finds in them the places where God chooses to dwell and to summon the reader. The book suits anyone who wants to see daily experience as a setting for faith.
