About this book
This edited volume gathers nine contributions on studying individual microbial cells rather than averaging across whole populations. Its chapters range from light microscopy of mitochondrial variation within and between cell groups to advanced imaging of microbes. Other chapters examine the mechanical properties of single cells, the pursuit of ever finer analytical limits, and whether bacteria are alive without relying on culturing them.
The collection also covers the data side of the field. One chapter tracks natural microbial communities over time by combining community fingerprinting, flow cytometry and trend analysis. Another explains multivariate statistical methods for interpreting flow cytometry data, and a final chapter models population dynamics in biotechnology from measurements taken on individual cells. A chapter on the algebraic and geometric description of cells and on how traits pass between generations rounds out the volume.
Contributors come from several research groups in microbiology, biotechnology and bioengineering, and the book is aimed at researchers and advanced students working on microbial analysis and single-cell methods.
