Hölderlin
About This Book
Hölderlin is a play in two acts that tells the life of Friedrich Hölderlin, counted among the greatest German poets. Peter Weiss chose the dramatic form for a biography, and he set the poet's story against the political and social climate of his age. Weiss said he wanted to portray the inner conflict of a man driven to madness by the injustice and humiliation he saw around him. This man wholeheartedly backs the revolutionary upheavals of his time, yet cannot find any practical course of action that would relieve the suffering he sees. The result is a lyrical inquiry into Hölderlin's intense and far-reaching writing and into the turbulent life that lay behind it. Nearly fifty years after it first appeared, the play still holds its audience and still divides opinion.
