Holiness
About This Book
Few instructions in the Christian life are as demanding, or as often misread, as the call to holiness in Leviticus 11:44 and 1 Peter 1:16, along with the summons to perfection in Matthew 5:48. This book asks what those passages actually require of believers.
Three scholars from the Wesleyan tradition approach the subject together. Their work moves through close readings of key biblical texts, a survey of how the church has understood holiness across the centuries, and reflection on how entire sanctification relates to other Christian doctrines.
The authors then propose a "neo-holiness" framework that keeps the pursuit of Christian perfection at its center while steering clear of Pelagianism. They draw on historic teaching about grace and the work of the Holy Spirit, combined with the strongest elements of Wesleyan thought. On their reading, the commands to be holy and to be perfect stop looking like a heavy load and start looking like a gift.
