About this book
In this work, J.C. Ryle urges readers to live apart from the world and to keep their thoughts fixed on heavenly things. Ryle was a clergyman in the Church of England who served through nearly the whole of the Victorian era. He was also the first Bishop of Liverpool.
Ryle supported every form of evangelism, but he felt most strongly drawn to large-scale preaching in the cities. His influence on Victorian evangelism spread largely through his tracts. He wrote more than 200 different ones, and several million copies were circulated across the country in a range of languages.
At the center of Ryle's response to the problems of his day was a call for personal revival grounded in biblical holiness. He believed that this message speaks as clearly to readers now as it did to his own generation.
