Growing up in Australia, she spent her childhood on the beach with Jake Bennett, her older brother's best friend. He showed her how to build sandcastles, they gathered seashells, and they dug moats to guard the imaginary princess living inside the castle. To him she was his princess, and he was the boy she could never quite forget. As his career as a singer-songwriter took off, his summers in Australia came less often, but she kept his memory close. Now he is a multiplatinum star touring the world with songs that move audiences, while she filled a notebook with his name.

When Jake returned for her brother's thirtieth birthday party, she was eighteen and no longer the girl he remembered. A single lingering touch was enough to spark something between them. Years later, after she graduates, an internship in New York places her in a Brooklyn brownstone directly across the street from Jake's home.

Jake insists they are too different to work, but she is determined to prove him wrong. Five years apart have only deepened her longing, and his troubles do not frighten her. She believes she can make him happy if he will let her try, and she has held on to more than his old sweatshirt. The question is whether Jake Bennett, the King of Ballads, can be won over.
