House Mouse

On a cold morning, a resourceful mouse comes across a crackling fire that offers warmth. She builds a stove right where she found it. When a fox gives chase and then unexpectedly halts, she lays down a floor on the patch of ground where she feels safe. Before long she seems to have nearly everything a home requires, though one thing is still missing: companions.

Michael Hall, who also created Red: A Crayon's Story and Perfect Square, tells this tale of industry, imagination, and generosity. Its themes include what makes a place feel like home, along with friendship, empathy, and construction.

Hall's bold, bright mixed-media illustrations, together with the mouse's collection of tools and her building projects, are likely to draw in even the youngest listeners. The story is playful and full of surprises, and it carries a clear message about friendship, empathy, and welcoming others.
