About this book
Howl is an anthology of original stories and poems by women writing in contemporary horror, all built around the link between women and wolves. The editors argue that this bond has long been buried: a woman bound to the moon and its cycles of blood, rage and transformation, with an urge to shapeshift that runs deep beneath her skin. She is both divine and monstrous, and she frightens people because she is the feral, wild and mad part of everyone.
The collection places itself in a long line of women who have played with the wolf and coaxed it out of the woods, from Angela Carter's "The Company of Wolves" to Rachel Harrison's Such Sharp Teeth. Its premise is that feeding the untamed self can release the beast within, bringing strength, sisterhood and the confidence to howl, and freeing women from shame so they can find and accept their truth.
The contributors give voice to wolves and to women as they shed their skin, unhinge their jaws and bare their teeth. The book is edited by Lindy Ryan and Stephanie M. Wytovich, both award-winning editors.
