About this book
Hunting Eichmann is a nonfiction account of the long search for Adolf Eichmann, an SS officer who oversaw the deportation of Jews across occupied Europe and is regarded as one of the Holocaust's central organizers. As Berlin fell at the close of the Third Reich, Eichmann discarded his SS uniform and slipped out of sight. After breaking out of two American prisoner-of-war camps, he made his way through the mountains and out of Europe, eventually building an unremarkable life in Buenos Aires.
The men and women who went after him came from very different backgrounds. They included a determined West German prosecutor, a blind Argentine Jewish man and his daughter, and Mossad, a young Israeli intelligence service whose agents had personal reasons to see Eichmann answer for his crimes. Neal Bascomb, a journalist known for narrative nonfiction, presents the first full account of their efforts, from the earliest leads to the capture and the attempt to smuggle Eichmann out of Argentina to face trial in Israel.
The book draws on Mossad's surveillance photographs, which are reproduced here for the first time. Its suspenseful pacing reads like a spy novel, but every event described is historical fact.
