Beyond the steady flow of everyday concerns, my mind is full of what lies ahead, what the day has brought, what is happening in the wider world, and a to-do list that never quite leaves me alone.

Through all of this mental noise, I keep drifting back to certain pictures from the past. In those moments I glide across a level surface, the lid of a box that holds something I treasure for myself alone. To take stock of these recollections, I run a private ranking modeled on David Letterman's Top Ten, cataloguing the valuable, unreplaceable images that have stayed with me for years.
