Imagination + Technology
About This Book
Imagination is prized everywhere, yet it resists easy definition. Scholars have proposed everything from narrow cognitive explanations to views that credit it with the power to build worlds. It lets us forecast what lies ahead and revisit what has already passed, and it allows people to picture the world through someone else's eyes, which everyday social life depends on. The stories our minds produce also shape how we understand ourselves. Imagination carried humanity to the moon and gave Einstein his famous thought experiment about chasing a beam of light. Human-computer interaction depends on imagination at every stage, from rough early sketches to the plausible scenarios and storyboards common in practice, and onward to the more speculative territory of design fiction. Even so, the design and HCI literature seldom examines imagination directly, and virtual reality barely touches it at all. This book sets out to close that gap by asking how people imagine, conceptualise, design and make use of digital technologies. Drawing on years of hands-on and academic work in HCI, together with research from psychology, design, cognitive science and HCI itself, the author adds a measure of philosophy and anthropology. The opening section studies imagination in its own right and lays out the fundamental building blocks of a fresh account. Later chapters examine how imagination shapes the design, aesthetics, use and experience of digital technology, and the final chapter turns to the provocative character of imagination. The book is aimed at anyone working in interactive technology or related fields, including researchers, students and practitioners.
