In the Deep End

In this excerpt, one character insists that he has changed. Speaking with sudden seriousness, he promises the narrator that he will stop applying pressure, that they will take things slowly, and that he will no longer make physical advances.

The narrator laughs at the vow, finding it almost absurd. The moment hints at a history of unwanted pressure and at the narrator's wariness toward reassurances from someone who has pushed before.
