About This Book
Valentino, a detective who works in the world of cinema, is called to the estate of Ignacio Bozel to pick up a valuable gift for a university film library. The prize is Bleak Street, a noir picture from Hollywood's classic era that was thought lost for more than six decades and never reached audiences. Its leading man, Van Oliver, was a gifted and magnetic performer with supposed ties to the mob. He vanished while the film was in post-production, and most assume rival gangsters killed him, one more unexplained disappearance in the industry's history. Fearing a costly flop, the studio chose to bury the picture instead. UCLA's publicity office is eager to acquire the film, but only if Valentino can turn it into a sensational story timed to coincide with a public release. The university wants answers about what became of Oliver. What starts as a search for a modest length of vintage film stock soon leads into a far murkier world.
