About This Book
Architecture Before Speech sets out a theory of contemporary architecture built on the work of 112 design practices, illustrated with 750 images. The authors challenge the common view that today's architecture has no center and that anything goes. They argue instead that much recent work shares a common project. Beneath the varied surface of design imagery, which spreads quickly online, lies a common mechanism: an accord about how architectural forms arise from design procedures. The authors call this mechanism inscription. It gives architecture a form that audiences can readily understand while also pushing the discipline toward new outcomes. The approach has broad appeal and also pushes against established conventions. The book gathers essays by eight contributors: Catherine Ingraham, Lucia Allais, Stan Allen, Phillip Denny, Edward Eigen, Sylvia Lavin, Antoine Picon, and Marrikka Trotter. Together they offer a range of critical perspectives on the work that defines architecture's second decade of the twenty-first century.
