Interrogating Homonormativity
About This Book
Mowlabocus examines homonormativity, the concept at the centre of the book, and considers how its politics have shaped the lives and everyday practices of gay men, mainly in the UK. Rather than offering a broad survey, the author works through a series of focused case studies. The chapters take up same-sex marriage, HIV treatment, dating and hook-up culture, drug use in sexual settings, and gay men's working lives. Across them, the book develops an argument about how neoliberalism has helped define gay male identities and practices in the UK and the USA. The central question is how far the sexual politics of neoliberalism reach into gay men's sense of self, their relationships with one another, the spaces they move through in daily life, and the identities they take on at work. The book also problematizes the concept of homonormativity itself.
