Maryse travels the country with her companion Vasyl, presenting herself as a medium who can reach the spirit world. Their staged séances earn them good money, largely because audiences read Maryse's appearance as foreign, but the whole performance is a fraud. Their route is always on the move, and the seminary stop looks like only another engagement.

The booking is at Fogg River Seminary, a girls' school in a small Illinois town. Partway through the show, a blizzard seals off the building from the town outside. In the cold corridors, a voice begins to recite what the dead know, and Maryse has no option but to listen. This time, the voice is genuine.
