Invisible Lines
About This Book
Zebunnessa Rahim is born in East Pakistan to a Bihari father and a Sylheti mother. Her childhood is a sheltered one: she slips away from her parents to meet her half-Scottish lover, watches her friends dance at parties in their tight outfits, and spends summers eating mangoes at the villa of her grandfather, a politician. Then comes 1971, and her world falls apart. She becomes a victim of both sides, the West Pakistani soldiers and the East Bengali freedom fighters. Homes become refugee camps, lovers are divided by the languages they speak, and a father gives up in despair while his son fights for independence. After nine months of fighting, victory brings problems nobody expected, including adjustment, acceptance and, for young Zeb, a new national identity. This first novel explores the atrocities that accompanied the Liberation War of Bangladesh, the rebellion that created a country while tearing families apart.
