About this book
This book surveys the major political developments in Iraq over the past century. It is an up-to-date, accessible study that aims for an understanding of the country that is sympathetic but balanced, and that recognises Iraq's important role in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and in world affairs.
Andrew J. Flibbert builds his analysis around three concepts: the pursuit of power, the effect of state institutions, and the transformation of social identities. With these he explores the political, economic and social sides of Iraqi national life. He compares Iraq with several MENA countries and other Arab states, and he assesses its relations with outside actors such as the United States, the European powers, China and Russia.
The book keeps Iraq's long and complex history in view but gives special attention to recent events. These range from Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 to the American-led invasion in 2003, and on to later struggles over elections, the Islamic State and democracy. Flibbert argues that, despite these difficulties, Iraq's story remains a hopeful one as it moves forward.
Wide-ranging yet closely focused, the book is written for students, scholars and general readers interested in Iraqi politics, international relations and political economy.
