About this book
Jeff Porcaro left a mark on more recordings than most drummers of his time, and musicians and audiences alike regarded him with deep respect. He was a founding member of Toto, the band whose Grammy win is noted in the source, and he also recorded and toured with a long list of popular performers across the closing decades of the twentieth century.
Robyn Flans, who was a friend of Porcaro for many years, draws on that closeness to trace his musical path. The book begins with his childhood and early development, then follows his arrival on the Los Angeles music scene, his rise to fame with Toto, and his long career as one of the most in-demand studio drummers in the world. Porcaro died in 1992 at the age of 38.
Flans combines her own interviews with Porcaro and fresh conversations with well-known musicians, including Bruce Springsteen, Donald Fagen, Ron Howard, Jackson Browne, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Richard Marx, David Gilmour and Peter Frampton. They recall his playing and personality in vivid detail. Bandmates and relatives, among them David Paich, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro and Joe Porcaro, add their own stories.
The book covers Porcaro's body of work and the Los Angeles studio sessions and rock tours of the 1970s through the 1990s. It will appeal to fans, working musicians and young drummers.
