Jackie Ormes Draws the Future
About This Book
This picture book biography traces the life of Jackie Ormes, born Zelda Jackson in Pittsburgh on August 1, 1911. As a child she discovered that a pencil could carry her anywhere: a meadow as wide as her paper allowed, or an ocean painted any shade of blue she pleased. At high school she sketched and recorded everyday life for the yearbook, but her ambitions already reached further. She went on to create witty cartoon characters, including Torchy Brown, Candy, and Patty-Jo 'n' Ginger, who appeared in African American newspapers such as the Pittsburgh Courier and the Chicago Defender. Her comics took on racism, pollution, and social justice, drawing public attention to those issues. Ormes was the first Black female American cartoonist, and the book points out that she was not the last. The story is told through lively text and drawings by Liz Montague, one of the first Black cartoonists at The New Yorker, who continues Ormes's legacy for a new generation of readers.
