Jihadi Jane
About This Book
Ameena and Jamilla are best friends at a school in suburban Yorkshire, and they could hardly be more different. One smokes cigarettes in the playground, while the other belongs to her mosque's discussion group. When heartbreak and doubt leave Ameena alone and adrift, she turns to the Allah that Jamilla has always loved, looking for comfort and a sense of purpose. Soon both girls are drawn to Hejjiye, a powerful preacher online who runs an orphanage in support of men fighting in the name of jihad. They leave their families and country behind and travel to Syria to join the Islamic State, devoted to a cause they accept without question. Things turn darker once Ameena marries Hassan, a jihadi leader, and Jamilla starts to see the world she gave up everything for in a new light. Escape looks almost impossible, yet there may be one way out. The novel asks whether the two young women will take it, and what it would cost them. Tabish Khair's story portrays the militant brides found around the world and the terrible price of religious fanaticism.
