Kabir
About This Book
Kabir lived from 1398 to 1448 and is remembered as one of India's great mystics. He was also a satirist, a philosopher and a poet whose humour and insight have not dated. His interests ran from theology and social thought to music and politics, and for some five centuries his songs have been sung and cherished by people from every walk of life. Kabir was Muslim by name, yet his ideas sit where Hinduism meets Islam, where Bhakti meets Yoga, and where religion meets secularism. His verses are bold in their rhetoric and subtle in their thinking, and they can be playful and profound within a single couplet. This volume gathers one hundred poems in new translations by Vinay Dharwadker. For the first time, the selection draws on major sources in about six literary languages. The translations stay close to the structure, voice and style of the originals, so that Kabir appears in his many guises within his historical and cultural setting. Plain on the surface and layered beneath, the poems will reward careful readers anywhere.
