Kneel

Russell Boudreaux, called Rus, is a Black teenager in a small Louisiana town where he believes football offers the only realistic escape. As the varsity tight end, he works toward a college scholarship and a chance to compete before a national audience. This debut novel examines racism, injustice, and the ways young people find their own voice.

When Rus's closest friend is wrongfully arrested and removed from the team, Rus must choose between staying quiet and speaking up. Then, during the national anthem, he kneels. In a single moment he goes from celebrated local athlete to a target of hostility.

Rus does not face the backlash alone. His best friend and an unexpected ally stand beside him as he fights for his athletic dreams and for justice.
