Know the Truth

Long before he led the Church of England, George Carey was a boy in Dagenham. This memoir traces his path from those early years through his national service with the RAF in the early 1950s, and then into the ministry. It follows his rise to become Bishop of Bath and Wells and, later, Archbishop of Canterbury.

Alongside his public career, Carey writes about his marriage, his family and the friendships that shaped him. The warm, personal tone of these chapters sits beside a broader account of the political currents that surrounded his years at Lambeth Palace.
