Kohima
About This Book
On 7 March 1944, Tokyo announced that its invasion of British India had begun. Within weeks the Japanese 31st Division had crossed the Chindwin River in northern Burma and was pushing forward on a broad front toward Imphal and Kohima. From early April the fighting around Kohima Ridge was fierce and set in the jungle. The British Fourteenth Army under Slim held its ground, and by late June the Japanese were in full retreat. Swinson argues that Kohima deserves a place beside Alamein, Midway and Stalingrad for its strategic weight. In the battle's aftermath, growing Allied air power in the region became a major reason the war in East Asia turned against Japan. Swinson served at Kohima himself. He draws on documents and diaries from both the Japanese and the Allied side to tell a gripping story of courage and combat. He also examines the political background to the battle and its long-term consequences, and he places it among the great battles of history, a verdict Mountbatten shared.
