About this book
Ginger Daughtry and her two roommates are living their best lives in 1970s New York City. They dance under disco balls, work out who they are and what they want, and refuse to see themselves as victims of a city that is far rougher on women than its glamour lets on. Then one of them is assaulted, the police do nothing, and the three women decide to act themselves. Out of that decision comes Lady X.
What begins as petty vandalism turns into something much more dangerous. When a body is found after falling, or being pushed, from a height of five stories, every eye turns to Lady X. By then she has disappeared without a trace.
In present-day Los Angeles, Margot Cooper is trying to hide from the world and from the paparazzi after her actor husband's betrayal becomes very public news. She retreats to her childhood home, where her sister and teenage daughter are with her. In the attic she finds a box of old newspaper clippings about Lady X, a vigilante who exposed and vandalized awful men across New York City in the summer of 1977. One blurry photograph stops her cold.
The past is suddenly catching up with Margot, just as she has to decide what her own future will look like. Told across two eras, this is a propulsive novel about female anger, friendship and payback.
