Late Light
About This Book
Michael Malay grew up with Indonesian, Australian and American roots, and this book follows him as he builds a life in England. Along the way he notices how his own experience of moving and settling resembles the lives of the animals he studies. The book asks what it means to love things that are disappearing, and what the living world around us has to teach about it. Malay focuses on four creatures that rarely attract affection: eels, moths, crickets and mussels. Through them he traces the economic, political and cultural forces that have reshaped Britain's landscape. Migration, belonging and extinction run through each chapter, linking the animals' stories to his own. The book blends memoir, natural history and nature writing into a meditation on being and belonging. It considers the wonder these animals sparked in earlier generations, the hope they still offer, and the delight they might hold for children today. Readers of Robert Macfarlane, Raynor Winn and Helen Macdonald should find much to enjoy here.
