Leela
About This Book
Leela is an illustrated anthology of Indian love and desire, built from poetry and images set side by side. The title refers to divine play, the love games of gods and mortals, and the book takes that idea as its mood. It is meant to be read slowly, as a bedside companion, whether by two lovers together, alone, or given as a gift. The verse covers a long span of Indian writing. It begins with the classical texts, passes through the Bhakti poets and the Sufi mystics, and arrives at bold contemporary poetry. Throughout, sensuality is treated as part of everyday life in Indian culture rather than something set apart from it. The pictures come from Indian contemporary artists and photographers, along with two Americans who work with Indian themes. Their paintings, graphics and photographs are frankly erotic and carefully composed, modern in look yet rooted in the Indian erotic tradition. The editor's hope is that in a world busy with consumption, the book offers a pause to savour the senses.
