Leeway Cottage

When Germany occupies Denmark in April 1940, Sydney Brant, a young woman from a wealthy family at the Dundee summer colony, marries Laurus Moss, a gifted Danish pianist. The couple trust that their temperaments suit each other, but Laurus's close-knit family lives in Copenhagen, where their safety depends on how the war unfolds.

By the war's end, the Moss family has taken an active part in an effort led by ordinary Danes that saved nearly all of the country's seven thousand Jews. The story follows that rescue alongside Sydney's life in America, where she organizes a group of women knitting for the war effort and gives birth to a child.

The novel traces one American marriage across much of the twentieth century and pairs that domestic story with the wartime rescue in Denmark.
