Lengtonghoih

Lengtonghoih is a folktale from Northeast India, told here with full-color illustrations. Lengtonghoih is a beautiful young girl who is dearly loved by her seven brothers. A cruel prince who wants to marry her carries her off, and the brothers set out on an adventure to rescue her. In the end it is she who saves them, with the help of mystical power and magic.

Folktales from many parts of India have been translated widely and have become part of national narratives. Stories from Northeast India, a culturally rich but underrepresented region, remain largely unknown outside their own communities. This book presents a traditional yet subversive tale from the Paite people, an indigenous community from Manipur.

The book was conceptualized by Richard Khuptong, translated by Mercy V. Guite, and illustrated in full color by Tanya Gupta. It is meant for children and adults alike.
