Limitarianism
About This Book
When poverty worsens, everyone can see it: more people sleep rough and the lines at food banks grow longer. When the rich get richer, there is little to notice in public, and for most people daily life carries on unchanged, at least at first. Ingrid Robeyns, a philosopher and economist, argues that this invisibility has let a problem of extreme wealth grow out of control over the past fifty years. She examines the issue from moral, political, economic, social, environmental and psychological angles. Her case is that extreme wealth cannot be justified and that it harms everyone, the rich included. As an alternative to the current system, Robeyns proposes limitarianism: a firm upper limit on how much wealth any one person can accumulate. She presents this as an answer to many of the problems of neoliberal capitalism and as a route to a much better world, and she argues that nobody deserves to be a millionaire.
