Lirael

Lirael is the second book in the Abhorsen trilogy, following Sabriel, and it returns readers to the Old Kingdom. Lirael grows up in the Clayr's Glacier, among the large extended family of the Clayr, and she feels like an outsider there. Her mother left her, her father is a mystery to her, and she looks nothing like the people around her.

The gap that hurts her most is that she lacks the Sight, the ability to perceive the present and the futures that might come. It is the birthright of every Clayr, and she has none of it. Even so, the fate of the Old Kingdom rests with her. An ancient evil is growing stronger, working against the Royal Family, cutting off the Clayr's Sight, and threatening to dissolve the boundary between Life and Death.

Lirael must set out on a perilous errand with only her loyal companion, the Disreputable Dog, for support. Written by Garth Nix, an Australian author, the story follows her as she searches for the courage to pursue a destiny she has not yet found.
