Loca
About This Book
Loca is set in New York in 1999 and follows two best friends, Sal and Charo, who are both trying to hold on to their dreams in a city that seems intent on wearing them down. Sal loves books and science and wants to move beyond a dead-end job in a city that is still new to him. He is held back by painful memories of his past in Santo Domingo. Charo is free-spirited, but at twenty-five she is surprised to find herself a mother. She is partnered with a controlling man and has worked at the same supermarket for years. Her life has shrunk to the kind of domesticity she believed she had left behind in her home country. Then Sal falls in love one night at a gay club. That meeting opens up both friends' lives to a lively circle of new people, and it pushes them to confront what they owe to themselves, to their pasts and futures, and always to each other.
