Lockdown Shakespeare
About This Book
This edited volume is presented as the first in-depth study and sourcebook on Lockdown Shakespeare. Its contributors come from stage and screen studies, early modern scholarship and adaptation studies, and they examine the work made during the Covid-19 pandemic through the ideas of form, liveness, reception, presence and community.
Alongside the academic chapters, the book includes interviews with theatre makers and artists who describe the difficulties and advantages of creating new work online. Educators also explain how digital tools helped them teach Shakespeare through performance.
The productions covered vary widely. The Show Must Go Online presented the First Folio on YouTube, while Creation Theatre and Big Telly staged interactive versions of The Tempest and Macbeth using Zoom as their stage. Other productions discussed include Arden Theatre Company's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Tender Claws' 'The Under Tempest', The Shakespeare Ensemble's What You Will, Merced Shakespearefest's Ricardo II, CtrlAltRepeat's Midsummer Night Stream, Sally McLean's Shakespeare #AllTheWebsAStage (The Lockdown Chronicles) and Justina Taft Mattos's Moore: A Pacific Island Othello.
The book argues that moving Shakespeare online during the pandemic gave rise to new forms of performance, each with its own conventions, aesthetics and understanding of liveness. It documents the range of this work and how it developed.
