Logic Primer, Third Edition
About This Book
Logic Primer is a concise but rigorous introduction to symbolic logic. It gives brief definitions of key concepts, illustrative examples, and exercises. The book begins with the definitions of validity and soundness, then builds a formal language, proof theory, and formal semantics for sentential logic in chapters 1 to 3. Chapters 4 to 6 repeat the process for first-order predicate logic, and chapter 7 adds identity. The third edition reorganizes the material from four chapters into seven. This makes the text more modular and lets teachers choose different paths through it. New exercises have been added, and all exercises are now ordered so that students move from easier to harder problems. The treatment is spare and elegant, with very little chattiness. Students can move directly from one topic to the next, and instructors remain free to teach the subject in whatever way suits their class. The book has more than thirty exercise sets, with answers to many of them in an appendix. A companion website lets students enter and check proofs, truth tables, and other exercises interactively.
