Long Gone

Long Gone is a novel in Joanna Schaffhausen's Detective Annalisa Vega series. Annalisa, a Chicago detective, upended her personal and professional life when she turned in her father, a former cop, for his part in a murder. Her family cannot forgive her, and her fellow officers no longer trust her.

When detective Leo Hammond is found dead in a bizarre killing, Annalisa figures she has nothing left to lose by digging into whatever secrets he kept behind the thin blue line. She soon focuses on a man with good reason to want Hammond gone: Moe Bocks, a wealthy, fast-talking car salesman who once got away with murder and would not let Hammond give him a second chance to be caught. Bocks remains the prime suspect in the brutal, unsolved death of his girlfriend, and he now has his eye on a new woman, Annalisa's best friend.

Annalisa is desperate to protect her friend and make Bocks pay, either for Hammond's death or for his earlier crime. No one else sees the connection, so she takes ever greater risks to expose the truth. Both Hammond and Bocks had secrets worth dying for, and if she cannot untangle them soon, she may be the next victim.
