About this book
This account traces the Lotus marque from the Mark 1 of 1948 to the Evija of 2021, an all-electric hypercar presented as the most powerful of its kind in the world. Colin Chapman founded the firm in 1952 as an outgrowth of his pastime, and its early reputation rested on lightweight sports-racing cars with notable aerodynamics. The company entered Formula 1 in 1958.
Motor racing results form a major thread. Jim Clark and Team Lotus took the Drivers' and Constructors' World Championships in 1963 and 1965, and Clark also won the Indianapolis 500. Jochen Rindt was crowned champion posthumously in 1970 while racing for Gold Leaf Team Lotus. In 1972 Emerson Fittipaldi won the title in the JPS Type 72, and the team claimed the Constructors' prize in 1972 and 1973. Mario Andretti then delivered the title to JPS Team Lotus in 1978, which unexpectedly turned out to be the last of the marque's seven Formula 1 World Championship wins.
On the road, the Elite introduced the brand in 1957. The Elan followed as a fibreglass-bodied sports car praised for its handling, while the Seven offered a kit for home builders. The 1963 Lotus Cortina combined fast road performance with success in competition. The Elan Plus 2 was produced alongside the Elan two-seater and the Europa. In 1974 the road car line moved upmarket, adopting Lotus's own engines, with the Elite Mk 2 and Éclat, followed by the mid-engined Esprit, built from 1976 to 2004.
The founder's sudden death in December 1982, at the age of 54, marked a turning point. General Motors acquired Group Lotus in 1986 and sold it to Romano Artioli's Bugatti in 1993, a move that made possible the Elise, launched in 1996 and regarded as a breakthrough design. Ownership then passed to the Malaysian manufacturer Proton. The Series 2 Elise and the Exige arrived in 2000 and matured over the following two decades, and the Toyota V6-powered Evora was announced in 2006. In 2017 the global automotive company Geely acquired Group Lotus, opening a new chapter of financial stability. The 2,000bhp all-electric Evija, launched in 2020, became the company's flagship.
