About this book
Hamilton, Ontario, October 2025: a city already strained by shaky jobs, climbing rents and bitter divisions. Then people start disappearing. Three masked kidnappers take one victim each day, and they want the whole country watching.
Danny Clarke is twenty-six, works at the steel plant, and mostly worries about himself. His priorities are the Blue Jays' World Series run, staying friends with his ex-girlfriend (and certainly not trying to win her back), and working out what it actually means to be a good man. During a break at work one crisp October evening, he sees Jonathan Lean, the CFO of Braden Steel, bound at the hands and feet and hauled out of the office by three masked figures.
That is only the start. The kidnappers are assembling what they call "the perfect family," a twist on the company's slogan, "Strong as steel, strong as family." Jonathan is cast as the father, and more members will follow, chosen from people the abductors blame for the city's troubles. They flood social media with disturbing images and clips of their captives, made to spread fast, and Danny and his cousins Priya and Kabir find it impossible to look away.
As fear and suspicion grip Steeltown, the three cousins set out to find the kidnappers before the group can make an example of its "family." For Danny, the chase ends his habit of watching life from the sidelines. He has to take responsibility for himself and for other people, and learn that saving the day means growing up. Alex Spring's crime novel is tense and unexpectedly warm, a portrait of modern Canadian life that argues for community, connection and compassion in a divided time.
