Luca Learns

Luca Learns is a storybook for toddlers that introduces colors, numbers, and opposites through the stories of Luca and his family. It comes in three-in-one form, with each version reflecting a different kind of household: two moms, two dads, or a mom and a dad, so that young readers can see families like their own.

M. Hawkins first wrote the book for her own young children, as a playful way to teach them the basics. When some friends were expecting their first child, she planned to send them a copy, but she saw that Luca's stories, which centered on a Mommy and a Daddy, did not fit a household with two dads. She then reworked the book into three editions, titled Mommy & Mama, Daddy & Dada, and Mommy and Daddy, to help children grow up with a more inclusive view of the world.
