Maame
About This Book
Maame is a Twi word with several meanings, and for Maddie it means woman. Her life in London is far from satisfying. Her mother spends most of her time in Ghana yet still manages to be overbearing, which leaves Maddie as the main caregiver for her father, who has advanced Parkinson's disease. At work her boss is a nightmare, and she is tired of being the only Black person in every meeting. When her mother comes back from her latest trip to Ghana, Maddie seizes the chance to leave the family home and start living. By her own admission a late bloomer, she is ready for some important firsts. She moves into a flat share, accepts invitations to after-work drinks, pushes for more recognition in her career, and dives into the baffling world of internet dating. Before long, though, tragedy strikes. Maddie is forced to confront the true nature of her unconventional family and to weigh the risks and rewards of opening her heart. Jessica George's novel takes on present-day themes with humor, among them family duty, racism, female pleasure, the complexity of love, and the way friendship can save a person. It also explores what it is like to be torn between two homes and two cultures, and what it means to finally find where you belong.
