Mai
About This Book
In a home in a north Indian town, a joint family, its attendants and a steady stream of visitors make up a lively little world. Across three generations, the women and men of the household find different ways to adapt and to get what they want, some going along with the limits patriarchy sets and others pushing against them.
At the centre stands Mai, the seemingly gentle mother, who quietly shapes the relationships and actions around her and makes a life not only for herself but for everyone nearby. Her modern children try to free her from what they see as confinement, but the story complicates any easy idea of what bondage and freedom mean.
The novel is a rich weave of love and loss, with Mai as its commanding presence. It was Geetanjali Shree's debut work and received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002. Nita Kumar's translation brings it to English readers as a study of family, relationships and the tangled nature of freedom.
