About this book
This volume turns to women painters, sculptors and mixed-media artists who worked mainly across North America, from the late 1960s to the present. Its works come from the Shah Garg Collection, which aims to show how women have shaped the development of abstraction and the wider history of art. Joan Mitchell and Julie Mehretu are among the many artists represented.
Two extended essays by editors Mark Godfrey and Katy Siegel frame the book. Six scholars contribute further writings on subjects tied to the collection, including craft traditions, experiments with new technologies, and the way personal and communal identities influence making art. Fifteen artists also write about the artists who have inspired them.
Illustrated throughout with works by 136 artists, the book is intended for students of art as well as general readers. The artists featured include Pacita Abad, Candida Alvarez, Olga de Amaral, Emma Amos, Firelei Báez, Jennifer Bartlett, Barbara Chase-Riboud, Trude Guermonprez, Jacqueline Humphries, Suzanne Jackson, Maria Lassnig, Simone Leigh, Julie Mehretu, Joan Mitchell, Senga Nengudi, Toyin Ojih Odutula, Calida Rawles, Ilana Savdie, Tschabalala Self, Lorna Simpson, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Pat Steir, Lenore Tawney, Toshiko Takaezu, Charline von Heyl, Kay WalkingStick and Mary Weatherford.
