Lane Driscoll keeps dreaming that a strange man is chasing her. When a man who looks exactly like the figure from those nightmares confronts her in real life, she decides it is time to get away from her hometown until she can make sense of what is happening. She settles in Mystic Creek, Oregon, and takes a job at the local perfume shop, hoping for a quiet place to think.

Her fresh start is interrupted almost at once. A good-looking customer stares at her as if he knows her, then addresses her by someone else's name. He is Jonas Sterling, a local psychologist, and he believes he has just run into Veneta, a woman he dated years ago and has not seen since. It turns out Lane is a complete stranger to him, yet the resemblance is too close to be a coincidence.

As the two compare notes, they learn that Lane was adopted at age three and is now twenty-six, the same age as Veneta. The idea that she might have a twin is a shock, but something in Lane responds to it, and she becomes determined to find the sister she never knew. Jonas offers to help, and as they search together, a romance begins to grow between them.
